Welcome to SIENA

Information about SIENA For a hundred years or so, in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, Siena was one of the major cities of Europe. Virtually the size of Paris, it controlled most of southern Tuscany and its wool industry, dominated the trade routes between France and Rome, and maintained Italy's richest pre-Medici banks.Siena was pre-eminently a Ghibelline town and it often “crossed its swords” with the Florentine Guelphs in epic and bloody fights, that marked the history of the Italian Middle Ages. With the tragic coming of the pleague in 1348, Siena had a very difficult period, that led to its annexation to the Grand Duchy of Tuscany and to the loss of its independence. Since World War II, Siena has again become prosperous, owing partly to tourism and partly to the resurgence of the Monte dei Paschi di Siena. It today, sponsors much of Siena's cultural life, co-existing, apparently easily, with one of Italy's strongest left-wing councils. The Sienese land offers a varied and beautiful landscape, and green rows of the Chianti vines. The undisputed symbol of the town is the tower Torre del Mangia, in the renowed Piazza del Campo, that has been the theatre of the Palio for many centuries. Siena is the city of the blessed Virgins decisive, just as its heraldic symbol; passionate and contemplative; always climbing and descending; clear and at the same time obscure; steep and narrow streets. These are the reasons why Siena opens up its heart more than any other place.
